Guitar Lessons:

BEGINNER GUITAR

LEARN TO PLAY SONGS: Together we'll pick songs for you to start with. I'll show you how to hold the guitar and pick, and how to play easy chords. You will learn to read tablature, a simple notation system that will help you remember what you've learned. You will be able to play basic rock and folk songs within a few lessons.

HAVE FUN WHILE YOU LEARN: As you progress, you'll learn barre chords. With these you'll be able to play songs by artists such as the Beatles, Johnny Cash, Cold Play, Radiohead, Nirvana etc. At every stage, you'll be working on songs you want to learn so you will feel motivated to practice and experience the satisfaction of playing music you love.

PLAY SIMPLE LEADS AND MELODIES: As soon as you are ready, I'll show you basic scales and exercises to help you develop strength and agility. This will allow you to play simple leads and melodies.

YOUR GUITAR: If you don't own a guitar, I'll help you choose an instrument that fits your needs and budget. If you already own one, I'll make sure it's set up properly.

INTERMEDIATE GUITAR

You've gotten past the beginner stage - You can play open chords, barre chords, maybe do a bit of fingerpicking or play some leads.
You also know how to read tab and you've been downloading transcriptions from the Internet. But what you are playing still doesn't sound like the the recording, because the transcription isn't accurate!

A lot of free tabs do not contain any rhythmic notation. So much of the essential information is missing that unless you have the skill to figure it out for yourself, you just can't get it.

THE REAL DEAL: I present you exact transcriptions that contain all the important details that are essential to a piece and I make sure that you understand how to read them.

This will allow you to replicate every aspect of the songs you are studying (strums, leads, fingerpicking, etc.) Because I teach you the exact arrangements that you hear on recordings, you'll make an ever increasing connection between what you hear and what you play.

PLAY THE MUSIC YOU LOVE: You can choose any piece from my library of exact off - recording transcriptions. If you want to study a song I haven't transcribed - no problem - I'll be happy to show it to you right in the lesson. I also record the music at a slow to moderate tempo (on cassette tape or on your ipod). Between the transcription and the recording you'll have everything you need to learn the music of your favorite artists.

LEARN VARIED REPERTOIRE:
Depending on your interests, repertoire might include rhythm and leads in the following styles: blues, rockabilly, country, classic and contemporary rock, funk, reggae, r & b, as well as folk and fingerpicking styles - pretty much every contemporary genre.

LEARN TO PLAY BY EAR: You'll begin ear training by learning to identify the sounds and structures which are the fundemental building blocks of music. This will help you to create your own original solos.

SONGWRITING: At this stage you can bring in songs that you are writing. See the "Songwriting" section for details.

BAND WORKSHOPS: For my more advanced intermediate students, I offer the opportunity to get together with other students and play in a band format. This is fun and a great way to apply what you've been learning.

ADVANCED GUITAR

STANDARD MUSIC NOTATION: By this stage, if you haven't already learned to read standard music notation you will probably want to. I use materials developed at the Berklee School of Music. For those interested in exploring classical repetoire, study may include Bach Two Part inventions, adapted as duets for the guitar and Sor Studies.

REPERTOIRE THAT INTERESTS YOU: You can work on any repertoire that interests you ranging from advanced Clapton or Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, or Johnny Winter blowing the roof off the barn! Repertoire can include songs in alternate tunings (Drop D, G, D, DADGAD, etc)

LEARNING HOW TO TRANSCRIBE: At this stage I encourage my students to learn how to transcribe, so part of the study involves your transcribing music of your choice which you will present to me for review. Through constant transcription you will learn to identify the fine points and nuances essential to understanding each artist's performance.

COMPREHENSIVE THEORY: Advanced theory study includes learning all scales, in all keys and positions, triadic harmony, seventh chords, altered chords, and the uses of all these structures.

JAZZ REPERTOIRE: For those interested, I offer a study of standard jazz repertoire. Topics include: chord melody arrangements, improvising over moving chord changes, creating arrangements from piano sheet music, harmonic and structural analyses.

Bass Guitar Lessons:

As your skills develop we can incorporate songs you wish to learn into the repertoire study.

You will begin ear training. You'll learn to identify the intervals. You will learn major and minor scales as well as arpeggiated forms of the triads in all positions on the fingerboard.
